VISION FOR OLDS
Building a Stronger Community
Looking forward, I am optimistic for our Town’s future:
-
We have a safe community with a low severe crime index
-
We are adding an additional medical clinic
-
We are addressing our housing/rental needs with residential development
-
Over the past 4 years we have seen new retail/commercial business
-
Due to the foresight of community-minded residents years ago, Mountain View Power has returned $300k back to the community in the last 3 years
-
We are addressing our $2mln/ year water and waste water loss
-
We have responded to resident concerns with the ‘branch drop off’ and spring/fall pilot grass clipping program
-
Council and administration will continue to re-assess our service levels balancing resident requests with cost of delivery
The upcoming four years remain financially challenging for the Town, its Council and the residents/business owners. The town's cash position will continue to be impacted by our debt servicing obligations and approximately $2mln annual water loss, inflow and infiltration issues,. Spending decisions will concentrate on essential priorities and practical solutions. I will always keep two questions in mind: how does this enhance quality of life balanced with revenue/cost/tax implications? Economic development, particularly industrial growth, is crucial for boosting Town's revenue through property taxes and franchise fees. There is cause for optimism; the path forward will require effective decision-making based on: revenue considerations balanced with trade-offs, evaluating priorities compromise – skills I believe I can contribute to Council.
